Note:

  1. FREN 101 is not to be taken by any student who has completed more than 2 years of high school French.
  2. An SAT II Subject Test score of > 660 or an AP score of > 3 on either the French Language or Literature exam or a Department Placement Test score of > 477 means your Foreign Language Requirement is fulfilled.
  3. A score of 4 or 5 on the French Language exams earns 3 credits for FREN 331; a score of 4 or 5 on the French Literature exam earns 3 credits for FREN 332.
  4. New students must take the online test by June 10.
German
GERM 101 no previous German, or SAT II Subject Test score of < 400
GERM 102 a grade of C- or better in GERM 101, or SAT II Subject Test score of 410-500

Note:

  1. Your Foreign Language Requirement is fulfilled with a score of 536+ on the UVA placement test, an SAT II Subject Test score of > 650, OR an AP score of 4 or 5, OR a score of 7 on the higher-level IB exam.
  2. All students with previous background in Spanish who did not take the SAT II Subject Test or earn exemption through the Advanced Placement test MUST take the Department's Spanish placement test.
  3. New students must take the online test by June 10.
Tibetan

Note:

Students who have studied Tibetan language in the past at home or in any institution other than U.Va. should take both the written and oral placement test prior to their registration. A day or two before the actual class should be fine. The written test is a two-hour test (a short essay is included) and the oral test is a 30-minute oral interview and a presentation on any topic.
